Zhang Rong (444-497), born in Wu Prefecture of the state of Qi in Southern dynasties, whose courtesy name was Siguang, was also named as Zhang Shaozi. His unique personality, appearance and works made him different from the rest. Although he was reproached by others, he has attracted the people at that time and the later generations, which can be considered as a significant cultural phenomenon. His conduct also can be regarded as an important cultural phenomenon in Six Dynasties Period. This thesis is composed of two parts:The first chapter is the historical investigation for Zhang Rong and his works, which draws the outline of all his life and ideology, analyzes the unique charm of his personality and its formation reasons from the aspects of his statements and actions, style of writing and emotion, etc., and expounds the filing, scattering and compiling of his works. The second chapter is the collation and annotation of The collected works of Zhang Rong which was included in The collected works of the130masters in Han, Wei and six dynasty periods. On the foundation of his original style, the author respectively sorts out the works in accordance with his stylistic features—descriptive prose, letter, essay and poem, etc. and investigates his works in the form of explanatory notes.
