| The theory of risk society considers that the human society of the21st century is enteringa “risk societyâ€. Producting and allocating risk is the core of contemporary society. Risk isdefined and constructed by various organizations and interest groups.The media provides theinformation and feelings of risk. At the same time, they involve in definiting, explaining,resolving and strengthening risk. What’s more, in the risk society, the media that used todefuse risk are to be risk.Over the past five years, risk events are frequent. In particular, with the development ofthe Internet, the media become a double-edged sword. In order to make better use of themedia to warn, report and defuse risks，this article analyzes four reasons that constraintsmedias to play the roles. They are information blockade from government, the loss ofgovernment’s and experts’ authority, competitions between media and concept of journalists.According to the communication law of risk, the paper will dissertate the roles of media’four aspects. In the incubation period, media should be as a lookout to warning. When riskoutbreaks, media should be a record that reports it properly. In duration, media should bemediator that communicate mass with government. At last, to be a gatekeeper, medias needsum up experience.Playing roles right, we need do something following. First of all, improving laws andregulations, especially to strengthen Internet legislation. Secondly, breaking the current mediacontrol mechanism. Simultaneously, the establishment of risk assessment system is essential.Thirdly,to raise awareness of the risks of the government, medias and the public. Fourthly,relaxation of the Internet technical limitations, disclosuring public information and crisismanagement are effective for media in the risk society.
