With the development of radar technology, the structure and function of radar have been diversified a lot in recent years. The changes make it more difficult for radar test. Therefore, standards are pivotal to the radar system so as to easy steps of development, production and maintainance. This research in the development of an ATS for a series of radar also depends on the standardized pattern of interfaces and signal. It is unrealistic to expect the signals from the same series of radars are all the same, because they perform various functions. Therefore, the point of the research is how to make an automatic test environment which is efficient and stable.This thesis analyzes all the testing requirements of this series of radars, then put forward the whole program of ATS for radars. The structure of testing hardware is based on PXI/CPCI bus, aided by other buses. The entire system consists of a PXI/CPCI chassis and embedded controller, a data acquisition card, a communication card, power supply, passive conduction test unit, signal adapter, self-test system, movable target simulator and echo signal simulator. It can realise many functions such as signal measurement, process control, data transmission and status simulation. So it can test the radar thoroughly in all directions.The hardware of the ATS should be flexible and fully functional if you want to accomplish different testing assignment, typically the serial communication card, signal adapter and self-test system. The serial communication card can be configured into three different modes, which is more than sufficient of all the test requirement. The signal adapter transform the signal to be measured into the signal which can be easily obtained by data acquisition card. The self-test system can simulate test signals and workflow of radar, which is useful for a comprehensive selftest of the ATS.The software of the ATS should be portable and easy to use. It’s developed on the LabWindows/CVI platform, with many different techniques such as database access technic, multithreading technic and virtual instrument technic. This method makes the ATS accomplish the testing assignment more efficiently. The results of several experiments which make an all-round evaluation on the performance of the ATS shows that the ATS is able to satisfy the testing requirements of this series of radar and can complete all the testing assignment.
