As an effective bearing component, steel wire rope is playing an important in variousindustrial fields. In recent years, with the development of structural health monitoring, avariety of revolutionary technology has been developed to inspect damage of steel wire ropes.This paper aims at studying the imaging mechanism of damage monitoring of structures suchas steel wire ropes. This paper is organized as follow:(1) According to the requirements of metal wire detection, the time focusing TRMmethod based on virtual synthesis is put forward, by combining this mothed with activeacoustic emission, we can achieve damage imaging of long shaped structures.(2) The time focusing TRM method based on active acoustic emission was researched bysimulation. A simple2-D simulation model and a3-D steel wire rope model has beenestablished to perform the simulation of the proposed method(3) According to the proposing error of damage size occurred in time focusing TRMsimulation, the time reversal focusing peak was adopted to evaluate the damage size withmuch more accuracy..(4) At last, the virtual synthesis based time focusing TRM method was used by acousticemission detection to achieve damage imaging of real steel wire ropes. Thereinto, the virtualsynthesis technique was used to detect the damage scattering signals, and the detected signalwas inserted into the steel wire rope model by time focusing TRM to achieve damage imagingon computer. At the same time, the time reversal focusing peak was used to evaluate theactual damage state of the detected steel wire rope, and the measured results was used tobetter imaging the damage area.
