From written calculation, mental arithmetic to calculator, the development of modern science and technology progresses gradually, thus, we witness the diversity of mathematical operations. Since the curriculum allows students to use calculators, the knowledge of a large number of the calculators are joined in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools in order to make students familiar with the use of calculators, mathematical operation and mathematical exploration of law, guiding students to apply calculators into their life and learning. In this paper, the author uses the method of literature and questionnaire, the quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. This paper is mainly divided into three parts: first, statistics and analysis for the contents of text on the use of calculators; second, investigation about the usage of calculators for middle school students; third, to test and analyze the ability to operate mathematical problems for the middle school students. And then analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the use of calculators, presenting the author’s own thinking.Through the research, the author mainly finds several points: first, with the increase of grade, some students gradually become more dependent to calculator; second, the solving processes for most part of students are not standard and lack of preciseness; third, in particular questions, using a calculator can not improve the accuracy of the calculation; fourth, most middle school students can not master the basic knowledge and their calculation ability is poor, such as mutual conversion between decimal and fraction, commensurable, common denominator. Finally, the author believes that there are both advantages and disadvantages in using calculator, we can not misuse it because it is fast and convenient, nor can we forbid it because it has disadvantages. we should use it rationally by according to the specific circumstances of the students. But we must make students handle the basic algorithms and theory of computation, master solving processes, taking the calculator as an auxiliary tool, letting students improve operation ability and thinking ability, ultimately to cultivate students’ mathematical ability.
