| Dacheng Quan, a form of Chinese traditional martial arts, was established by Mr. Wang Xiangzhai based on Yi Quan, absorbing the strengths of various schools. Currently, San Da (free combat) and Tui Shou (pushing hands) constitute two major competitive events for Dacheng Quan practitioners. In other words, there haven’t been any widely-acknowledged and well-established Dacheng Quan competitive events so far. The motivation of this study is to look into the content and characteristics of Dacheng Quan training compared with other forms of martial arts, and in the end to explore the detailed competitive events and relevant rules with Dacheng Quan characteristics. This study aims to formulate Dacheng Quan competitive events and rules with Dacheng Quan characteristics so as to help organize and promote Dacheng Quan competitive events and improve people’s boxing skills; to arouse people’s interest in learning Dacheng Quan. create opportunities for more people to get to know and learn Dacheng Quan and lead people to understanding Chinese cultures with this form of martial art; and meanwhile, to provide preference and thinking points for other traditional forms of martial arts to form their competitive events and rules. Methods such as literature reviews, logical analyses, expert interviews and experiments are used in this study to raise five Dacheng Quan competitive events, respectively Zhan Zhuang (post standing), Dian Bo (a form of boxing in which a light touch means winning the competition), Tui Bo (a form of boxing started by pushing hands so as to improve defensive ability), Shi Bo (actual combats) and Jian Wu (to perform boxing in the way of dancing so as to express the level of one’s boxing skills), by looking into the six characteristics of training content of Dacheng Quan (1) to be simple in the form but complex in the connotation as every section is closely interconnected to each other; 2) to follow the steps of starting the training from oneself, then making use of an imagined object, and finally extending the force from the object to the other people; 3) to pay attention to the training of one’s general force and spirit and will; 4) to pay attention to Zhan Zhuang while getting rid of the series of skills and tricks in boxing; 5) to combine the static qigong and dynamic qigong, allowing them to complement each other; 6) to put the purpose of keeping a good health before that of attacking and defending oneself, and thefive features (1) to perform boxing with no regular moves; 2) to beware rivals’ tactics in advance and react accordingly so as to gain an advantage in the combat; 3) to defense and make use of the midline in one’s body; 4) to quickly finish a battle using according skills; and 5) to couple strengths with gentleness) of attacking and defending.Through the study on skills of Dacheng Quan, including Bu Fa (footwork), Quan Xing (fists). Liu Li (six different forms of forces), Ba Fa (eight different methods of boxing skills) and forms of boxing imitating twelve different animals, and on the "seven different training sessions" of boxing training, combining the comparison and summarization of the rules of competitive events of modern free combat, kickboxing, boxing, Thai boxing and jujitsu, and the characteristics of Dacheng Quan, detailed rules of five competitive events of Dacheng Quan are raised in this paper:1) Zhan Zhuang, to provide one hour’s time as a standard and four hours’ time as a limit, and it is optional for contestants to choose different stances with the only standard being avoiding obvious shaking movements; 2) Dian Bo. two sides of contestants finish one of the rounds of competitions with one side taking off all five pieces of clothes of the other side, and the footwork of Dacheng Quan is a must; 3) Tui Bo. the side attacking can use any kinds of bare-handed skills while the side defending can only use skills from Dacheng Quan to defense and counter attack; 4) Shi Bo, the former 30 seconds are for a non-formal section in which the two sides will try to attack; in the formal section both sides can use all of the bare-handed skills to attack and defense, and successive attacks are allowed until one of the side gives a sign of giving up or loses the ability to counter attack; 5) Jian Wu. with five to ten minutes, the content of which must comply to the system of Dacheng Quan training. |
