The Situational Approach requires teachers to create a real or nearly authentic language environment according to the teaching contents. In the recent years, many relevant researches have been studied both at home and abroad. Nevertheless, the application of Situational Approach in English grammar teaching is not much. Therefore, the study attempts to do a research on applying Situational Approach to English grammar teaching in junior high school.The author did a thirteen-week teaching experiment in Fuxin No.16 Junior High School. The participants of this study were 76 students of Grade eight. There were 38 students in both control class and experimental class. The collected data involved a pre-test, a post-test, an immediate test, a delayed test and questionnaires. It is to explore the following questions:(1) Can Situational Approach alter students’ attitude towards grammar learning?(2) Can Situational Approach improve students’ grammar achievement?(3) Is Situational Approach more effective for long-term memory of grammar rules than traditional method?The effective data analysis in the study indicates that after the same period of teaching, the experimental class learns English grammar more positively than before. Through mean scores of immediate and delayed test in the experimental class and further paired samples t-test, it can be found that the application of Situational Approach reinforces students’ impression on grammar rules, and the memory of the rules is more long-lasting by the Situational Approach than by traditional teaching method. The data analysis of post-test shows that Situational Approach can improve students’ achievement of the relevant English grammar tests, which confirms the effectiveness of the teaching approach.In summary, it is both practicable and effective to apply Situational Approach to the teaching process of English grammar in junior high school. The researcher also points out the limitations of this study and gives some suggestions for the further study. Therefore it is expected that the study can widen teaching idea and provide practical reference for the future grammar teaching in junior high school.
