English classroom is the major place for students to learn English. Therefore, it is an important task for English teachers to improve students’learning efficiency in the limited class time. As the saying goes "A well beginning is half done". The first step in English class is lead-in link. Although lead-in only costs a short period of time in the whole class, it does play a very important role in arousing students’interests and stimulating their motivation of English learning. The advantages and significance of lead-in draw English teachers’attention gradually. It’s difficult for students to shift their attention to classroom learning consciously at the beginning of the class. In consequence, teachers should design the lead-in link purposefully and carefully. Thereby, students’ attention can be shifted to the class and their desire for learn can be stimulated. Besides, students can also take part in the teaching activities positively. However, the current researches on senior high school English classroom lead-in are scattered, most are based on teachers’own experience and lack of empirical research. In addition, English textbooks give priority to reading and language skills such as listening, speaking and writing are all based on reading. So this thesis takes reading as a start point to study the current state of lead-in in senior high school English class.In order to realize the current situation of lead-in in English reading class in senior high school, the author did a research on lead-in in English reading class in Tongxiang Senior High School, trying to learn the major methods of lead-in that used by teachers, the existing problems and the possible effective lead-in methods in reading class. Firstly, the author tried to know the current implementation and problems of the lead-in in senior high school reading class through classroom observation. Then two questionnaires would be sent to teachers and students respectively to know their attitudes and opinions to the lead-in link. Finally some superficial understanding and suggestions were proposed.This thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. The author puts forward the background and significance of the thesis. The second chapter is the literature review, which includes theoretical research of lead-in at home and abroad. The third chapter mainly points out the research questions and describes the research design. The fourth chapter is the analysis and discussion of the results of the study. The data collected will be discussed and analyzed, which include discussion of the classroom observations and the questionnaire data and a simple analysis of teachers’interview. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. Based on the analysis of classroom observation, questionnaire and interview, this paper expounds the main findings, suggestions and strategies of lead-in and points out the deficiencies of this paper and the needs for further studies.
