"Well begun is half done." At the very beginning of a class, lead-in plays an important role in teaching. By carrying out lead-in, teachers can arouse students’ interest, activate their thinking, mobilize their enthusiasm, help students connect their previous knowledge with the upcoming new knowledge, which can lead to a good teaching effect. However, some teachers have tight teaching schedules. They infuse students with grammar points, and urge them to memorize English words. As a result, the functions of lead-in part were ignored. When the author was observing English classes in Tianjin Experimental High School, she did a thorough investigation and analysis of the situation of employment of classroom lead-in in Grade Two of that school through comparing and analyzing the effect of regular class lead-in and demo class lead-in. This research involved students from three classes and their teachers in Tianjin Experimental High School and methods such as questionnaire, interview and classroom observation were employed. The two research questions are as follows:the first one is what the current situation of employing lead-in methods in Senior Two English classes is and what effects they have on students and classroom atmosphere. The second one is what are the differences of lead-in in regular classes with the lead-in in demo classes and what we can learn from the demo classes. The research finds that teachers do not pay full attention to lead-in part, and they often employ multi-media method and revision method. However, students hope teachers can design various lead-in methods. Through comparison, it is obvious that lead-in methods are more various in high-quality English classes, and they help to achieve better teaching effect than lead-in methods in regular classes.
