| Lead-in is the first part in English classroom teaching. Although it does not take too much time, it has great influence on the whole teaching process. Effective lead-in can stimulate students’interest and the desire for knowledge, initiate their motivation, and make students know the learning objectives. Many scholars both at home and abroad have done some studies on lead-in, but the studies on English classroom lead-in are so sporadic and most of them are based on experience level, so more empirical studies are in demand urgently. In view of this, this paper bases on the theoretical frameworks of the Constructivism and the Input and Affective Filter Hypotheses. The subjects of classroom observation are 40 English classes of senior Grade 1 in Pingdong High School in Fuzhou, and the subjects of questionnaire are 150 students and 10 teachers from that school. Besides, the research takes the video of 14 high-quality high school English classes as objects. By means of classroom observation, questionnaires and case analysis, this paper aims to study the present situation and existing problems of normal English class and high-quality English class in senior high school, then find out the difference between normal English class and high-quality English class.The research results show that most English teachers in senior high school have realized the great significance of lead-in, but there still exists some problems in the actual English teaching process. For example, not every class has lead-in part, and the time of lead-in is not strictly controlled. Besides, the method of lead-in lacks of diversity and interest, and so on. However, teachers in high-quality English class can adopt different lead-in method according to different types of class and students’needs and interests. Moreover, the time of lead-in is reasonable and the method of lead-in is full of flexibility and diversity. After comparison, there are some differences between normal English class and high-quality English class in lead-in part. Lead-in is used more frequently in high-quality English class, the time of lead-in is more reasonable and the activities of lead-in are more interesting than normal English class. Therefore, the overall usage of lead-in in high-quality English class including the art, the principles and functions, methods of lead-in, which have something worthwhile for normal English class to learn. First, teachers should cultivate the consciousness of lead-in, and constantly enrich their own language art of lead-in. Second, teachers should enrich the import of the theoretical knowledge of lead-in. Third, the methods of lead-in should be full of flexibility and diversity. At the same time, teachers should play multiple roles in lead-in part.This research will help teachers strengthen the importance of lead-in and find out the problems existing in the actual teaching process, in order to adopt some effective lead-in techniques to improve teaching quality. So this paper is of certain theoretical significance of enriching the research on lead-in and has high practical value in improving senior high school English teachers’ teaching skills. |
