The world is developing faster and faster, and there is an urgent need to learn English for people living in this global village. The elementary education in primary school is a very important period for training the English integrated-ability. The vocabulary learning is the basis of English learning in Primary school. However, for foreign language learners pronouncing and spelling words is one of the most difficult parts. As one of the most popular teaching methods, since the second half of the 20th century phonics has been commonly used for English vocabulary instruction in English speaking countries. Phonics is based on the mastering of letter-sound correspondences. It is one kind of English teaching method of teaching pronunciation, spelling and reading. Phonics has been known to be a fast paced method of teaching beginners to learn English, especially for primary students.Because phonics, as a new and popular method of English teaching, was brought into China a few years ago, there are still few theoretical and empirical researches. So there is still large space for research of phonics in China. In view of the phonetic teaching in the curriculum standard request, the author used phonies method to teach the sixth grade primary school students to make them realize the English letters and letter combinations and its corresponding relation between phonemes. Students can read words out in line with the pronunciation rules. The study tests the students’ spelling effect through the pre-test, post-test and questionnaire, and the data were collected for analysis, it verifies that the phonics method can improve primary school students’ phonetic and the ability of spelling words. After learning phonics method, the students’learning interests and effect in English study should be improved effectively.The subjects of the study were from the six grade students of Greentown Yuhua Qinqin School in Hangzhou. The research lasted for one semester, and the method includes the introduction of the spelling rules and teaching students with the phonics method. The procedure goes in four stages:pre-test, the teaching model, post-test and questionnaire. The analysis of the pre-test and the post-test shows that the students in the experimental group have improved their vocabulary proficiency and spelling obviously. The result of questionnaire shows that the students in the experimental group are more interested in English learning. They participate in English spelling more actively. Therefore, this study concluded that the phonics teaching method is effective in primary English vocabulary teaching.
