Phonics is a kind of learning to read, to spell, and the English teaching of reading. It makes students learn vocabulary by establishing the corresponding relationship between letters or letter combinations and voice. In view of the phonetic teaching in the curriculum standard request, the author used phonics method to teach primary school students of the fifth grade to make them realize the English letters and letter combinations and its corresponding relation between phonemes. Students can read words out in line with the pronunciation rules. The study tests the students’ spelling effect through the pre-test, post-test and questionnaire, and the data were collected for analysis, it verifies that the phonics method can improve primary school students’phonetic and the ability of spelling words. After learning, students can improve the interest of learning vocabulary.The subjects of the study were from the fifth grade of Heping Zhongxin Primary School in Tianjin. This experiment will last for18weeks, the experiment contents mainly include:the basic knowledge about phonics stage and using phonics teaching combining with teaching material. The experimental process includes:pre-test, the teaching model, post-test. The analysis of the pre-test and the post-test shows that the students in the experimental group have improved their vocabulary proficiency and spelling correctly. Interviews with different level of the students’ English learning, experimental group are more interested in English learning. They will participate in English spelling more actively. Therefore, this study concluded that the phonics teaching method is effective in primary English vocabulary teaching.
