Reading, as a means of getting information and accumulating linguistic knowledge, is an essential part of comprehensive language ability. Primary school is the initial stage of English reading course, teachers should help the students to form effective reading strategies and develop good reading habits, which can lay a solid foundation for future reading learning.This research is based on the teaching of PEP textbook (Primary English Students’ Book) Read and write (Grade 5,6). The relevant research of this textbook is barely blank, because this textbook wasn’t put into use until 2012. As an English teacher in a primary school, after studying the background, meaning and relevant concepts of readings in primary school, the author hand out the self-made questionnaires to a certain amount of teachers who use this textbook, in order to find out the present teaching situation of readings in primary school, analyze reasons of these situations and try to give some strategies of how to teach readings in primary school by using this textbook.The thesis has five parts:The first part is the background and meaning of this research. It also contains literature reviews. Meanwhile it summarizes the present research situation about teaching readings in primary school. The second part focuses on the relative concepts and theories about teaching readings in primary school. The third part inquires into the present situation about teaching readings in fifth and sixth graders, at the same time analyzes the reasons. The questionnaires include three angles:teaching aims of reading, activities in reading class and reading strategies, reading evaluation. The author claims the main problems as follows:teacher-oriented teaching aims in reading class which lack of levels and unspecific; translate new words separately before reading; reading activities which do not match the strategies, monotonous reading evaluation methods. Based on the conclusion of the questionnaires, the fourth part gives strategies of how to teach readings in primary school by using this textbook. The fifth part is summary and suggestion, a brief summary of the main points of this article, and describes the deficiency and the thought of further study.
