Ancient poetries and proses have irreplaceably contributed to primary and middle school Chinese textbooks as a typical representative of outsta-nding traditional culture of China. Ancient Chinese Education has gained more and more attention since the beginning of this century in the proces-s of the mainland’s curriculum reform. The proportion of ancient poetries and proses in Chinese textbooks has been a controversial issue which focu-ses on the primary school textbooks.Looking over the histories, primary school’s Chinese education in time of the Republic of China was divided into two phases by New Culture Movement whose first one is Chinese literature and the second is Chinese language. Therefore, the Chinese textbooks of the Republic of China had two forms of Chinese literature and Chinese language. During the phase of Chinese literature, primary school Chinese textbooks were mainly writte-n in Classical Chinese which is a cultural highlight of China. And during the Chinese language phase, Chinese textbooks were written in vernacular instead of Classical Chinese, and Classical Chinese had lost its dominant position ever since. After the founding of the PRC, Chinese traditional cul-ture separated into two branches of Taiwan and the mainland. They had different attitudes towards the ancient poetries and proses in primary schoo -1 textbooks. However, as the Three Links across the Straitsare gradually a-chieved, the closely linked both sides have achieved communications on e-ducation and have reached some consensus on the inherit and developmen-t of traditional Chinese culture.This article has chosen the the primary School Chinese Textbooks of the Republican Business Edition, Taiwan Kang Hsuan Edition and Mainlan-d’s People’s Education Edition as the objects of the study in the backgro-und described above. This article has analyzed the ancient poetries and pr-oses in primary school textbooks by analyzing and comparing the contents of the books to make some contribution to the selection and edit of anci-ent poetries and proses in primary school textbooks.This article consists of three parts.The first is the overview of the three Primary School Chinese Teachi-ng Materials. This chapter presents the conceptions about the study and th-en analyzes ancient poetries and proses in these books. Last but not least, this article gives a summation of the causes of the situation.The second part is the selection of ancient poetries and proses of the-se three sets of books. This chapter analyzes the selection systems, the k-nowledge systems, the support systems and the homework systems of the three sets of books and eventually gets the feature of the books’systems.The third chapter has a detailed discussion on the application pattern of these books. This chapter evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of these books and gives us some enlightenment of selection of ancient poet-ries and proses in nowadays’primary school textbooks based on the usag-e of these three sets of books.
