As a kind of reading material which differs from text book, English picture book has the following feathers, vivid pictures, interesting story, authentic language and the various themes. Compared with the traditional reading teaching, which has the problems of single teaching technique, boring teaching materials, picture book reading teaching has its own advantages. It can easily arouse the interest of students in primary schools. Children can also build their vocabulary and learn some foreign cultures through English picture books. Based on the feather of pupil’s English learning and reading teaching, as well as the aim of elementary English teaching, it has great values to probe the effectiveness of picture books teaching and the suitable teaching strategy for picture books applied in elementary school teaching.And the paper is based on the following theories, that is Language Input Hypothesis Theory of Krashen, Cognitive Pragmatic Theory of Jean Piaget, Schema Theory from the cognitive part, and wakening education. Based on the analysis of related conceptions, practical research is carried out. It is proved that English picture book teaching can help to improve students’ reading efficiency and result by the way of experiment and interview. It can also help to improve pupil’s reading interests and improve their understanding of English culture.Based on the experience of research and practice, we need to pay attention to the following aspects, such as the choosing of picture books, the effective steps of teaching process, different teaching methods, the difference of different aged students, profound consideration and summary.
