The English subject is both humanistic and instrumental,and the key competence of the English subject is also based on respecting and adapting to the characteristics of the subject.It clearly defines that English learning should cultivate students’ four aspects of key competence,which should not only be addicted to improving their language learning ability but also pay more attention to their thinking enlightenment and cultural cultivation,especially for primary school students.In recent years,English picture books have been deeply loved by children for their attractive,educational,life-oriented and illustrated narration style.They have significant advantages in cultivating students’ language ability,learning ability,cultural character and thinking ability.More and more front-line teachers are beginning to explore the introduction of English picture books into English teaching to innovate the reading teaching mode.However,many problems have also been exposed in practice.For example,the cultivation of students’ key competence is seriously fragmented,and the teaching of the picture book is bound by the traditional teaching mode,so it is not easy to have much room for growth.Based on the value guidance of the key competence in English subject,this research is supported by Piaget’s cognitive development theory,Krashen’s second language acquisition theory,and Goodman’s overall language teaching theory.By using the adoption of teacher questionnaire,interview and classroom observation.Forty-seven English teachers from two primary schools in Tianjin were selected as the research objects to carrry out a multi-dimensional investigation.The result shows that there are still existing many problems in the current teaching of picture books in primary schools,such as teachers’ shallow understanding of teaching picture books,fragmentation of the cultivation of key competence,emphasize on language form,and ignoring the connotation of key competence,and the selection of picture books lacks scientific guidance.Aiming at the practical problems existing in the current teaching situation,this paper proposes the following four optimization paths:1.The value orientation of Picture books reading teaching points to the key competence of English subject.2.The selection principle of Picture books points to the key competence of English subject.3.The optimization strategy of Picture books reading teaching points to the key competence of English subject.4.The construction of Picture books reading teaching points to the key competence of English subject.To sum up,this paper takes English key competence as the value guidance to examine the possible problems in the reading teaching of English picture books in primary school and explores relevant countermeasures,which is serving students themselves.Therefore,the author hopes that the problems found in the research can arouse teachers’ reflection and attention,and the suggestions made can also provide some reference suggestions for front-line teachers.
