Lead-in, as the beginning pare of the whole English class, plays an important role in high school English teaching. But it is ignored in some English class. In addition, many teachers would like to tell the students directly instead of guiding them. Guiding by the assimilation theory for cognitive learning and based on the findings from relevant studies about the methods of lead-in and the proper roles of the teachers, the research takes the video of14high quality high school English class of Jiangsu province as object and tries to describe the current condition of the lead-in. From this, the researcher wants to explore the effective method of lead-in and guide the normal English class.The results indicate that:1. in a high quality English class the teacher can choose proper lead-in method on the basis of different types of class and improve the classroom efficiency, arouse the students to learn English.2. Among different types of lead-in method, the free talk, question and answer, review and lead-in through photos are more popular.3. In the high quality English classroom, the teachers are more prefer to orientate themselves as the organizer, controller and promoter which are to the benefit of the students’ role.According to the results, the research suggests the teachers in normal English classroom should use the right lead-in method and a proper role to enhance the efficiency of the high school English class and stimulate the students’ interests and desire to learn English, to explore by themselves.Besides, limitation of this research is pointed out and further research plan is raised out finally.
