| This paper discussed and reflected the process that a village transformed from a "cultivation" community to a "dis-cultivation" society during the modern times when the earth-bound society of China be baptized by the modernity, through an ethnographic study about the new earth-bound rebuilding in Ling Gen village, east Zhejiang province. This paper reviewed the academic history of China’s Rebuild earth-bound, discovered that the village society had always been in a dilemma of modernity during its social transformation: on the one hand, it hoped to receive the western modernity’s shock to complete the transformation from traditional village to the modern village, but on the other hand, it trapped in the starting point desperately. In recent years, under the circumstance of "New village" activation, Ling Gen village tried to reform the history telling of the village’s history, and use the method of "village tourism" to show its history, hoped to get on the road to modernization. Our survey conclude that the modernity of Ling Gen’s modernity is not only import from the outside but also from the reform of its traditions. This paper, through a story telling method, deconstruct and reflect the traditional elements in the village’s transformation. We suggest that if we use western countries’modernity as a mirror, Ling Gen is no doubt a village which is trapped in the dilemma of modernity, but through the history telling, we might support that there is more than one kind of modernity. In another word, the modernity in our view is based on the reformation and the reproduction of traditions, but not on the revolution of traditions. |
