Nowadays, the Chinese language teaching in South Korea is getting much higher attention and much wider demand along with the increase of culture and economic exchanges between China and South Korea. The teaching of Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL) includes two major parts:the language teaching and the culture teaching. Chinese traditional festivals, with long history and plentiful content, being a silhouette of Chinese nation’s culture and spirit, are considered to be the principal contents of the culture teaching of TCFL. Since the ancient times, South Korea’s culture has been deeply influenced by its neighborhood—China. Hence, these two countries, with innumerable and intricate associations, have a lot significant similarity in their traditional festivals.Adopting the approach of literature research, contrast, questionnaire, case study and practice, this paper tries to study the application of Chinese traditional festivals into the Chinese culture teaching in South Korea’s high schools. First, it discusses the status of teaching Chinese traditional festivals in the culture teaching of TCFL. Meanwhile, according to a brief comparisons between the traditional festivals of China and South Korea, this paper focus on the importance of teaching Chinese traditional festivals to South Korean. Second, based on the current situation of the Chinese culture teaching in South Korea’s high schools, a prevalence survey is launched through questionnaires among students and several interviews with teachers from 7 different high schools in South Korea to analyze, from several perspectives, the problems and particularities of teaching Chinese traditional festivals in South Korea’s high schools. Third, this paper presents four real teaching plans about Chinese traditional festivals in order to sum up the practical experiences. Fourth, it puts forward the proposals how to apply Chinese traditional festivals into the Chinese culture teaching in South Korea’s high schools.
