Major of animation existing only in Beijing Film Academy in 1970 s to 1980 s illustrated the late start of China’s animation education which in its early stage developed comparatively slowly. The 21 st century, however, has witnessed the proliferating boost of animation education in tertiary institutions after it’d gained tremendous support from national policies aiming to promote animation industry and putting an end to the severe shortage of animation professionals. Ever since, the major of animation has appeared in more than 600 higher institutions. Along with the remarkable and rapid development of animation education, however, come the problems.Although the market has been swamped by more than 500,000 graduates majored in animation, 150,000 jobs still stand empty. Is it because that the number of graduates cannot meet the market’s demand?Of course, no, the key is quality. It is because, to large extent, the lack of innovation among those graduates, indicating similarly the lack of innovation education in animation. Therefore, how to cultivate the ability to innovate becomes the core task for the animation art education in higher institutions. In fact, animation can be interpreted as how the students experience and understand the “static images” and bring them tolife, so images serve as an indispensable role in animation education. This dissertation will use “image” as its tool to explore how to achieve innovative education and nurture innovative animation talents by analyzing and researching both the external visual images and the internal memorized images.
