Chemistry is a natural science based on experiments which play a vital role in developing the subject of chemistry and in teaching chemistry.Experimental teaching in chemistry, in terms of the purpose of knowledge transmission in teaching chemistry for junior high-school students, is able to stimulate students’ interest and motivation of studying in chemistry, help students understand the essential and difficulties, and then improve students’ chemical knowledge. Further, from the point of view of quality-oriented education, this teaching is capable of training them to acquire the abilities of operating science experiments, cooperating with teammates, and exploring the unknown phenomena. However, for junior high-school students in rural areas, the experimental teaching currently aims only to present the relevant knowledge, which is not enough in terms of improving the experimental conditions and teaching methods. This paper studies the experimental teaching in chemistry on the basis of three-year practical chemistry teaching in Meijiang Middle School. These practices, which are consist of practising the different teaching methods for various experiments outlined in the textbooks, can serve as good examples in terms of choosing appropriate teaching methods according to the requirements of experiments. The content of this paper comprise mainly three aspects :(1) to review relevant literature about experimental teaching;(2) to summarize the various experimental teaching methods as only five methods, i.e., presentation by instructors, assistance with multimedia, illustrating through experiments, experiment by group, and presentation together with experiments; and to compare these five methods for advantages and disadvantages in each method through example analysis, integration of feedback from students, and careful comment of cautions for every method;(3) to summarize and present the contents of nine-grade textbooks(Part I and II, People’s Education version) and their corresponding existing experimental teaching methods; and to propose and design corresponding new teaching methods based on available teaching equipments and conditions, providing references for future teaching and research in chemical experimental teaching conducted by new and young practitioners.
