English is a global lingua franca, and widely learned as a second language worldwide, hasgained more attention in China with economic and social developments and consequenceglobalization. More and more people keen to improve their English. English teachers especiallyEnglish teachers from primary and secondary school play a vital and fundamental role to thestudents. In the21st century, English teachers should enhance their professional abilities to meetthe demanding of the new world. The competence and knowledge of English teachers directlyaffect the education quality and students’ English proficiency in schools. Dramatically attentionhas been drawn to the English teachers’ development,which has long been the focus of theEnglish teaching field. Consequently, it is very important to study the current situation of Englishteachers’ professional development in primary and secondary schools especially in rural area.The author analyzed the current situation of school English teachers in Hong’an, Hubei, asexample of typical rural area, based on the theories including Adult Learning Theory,ReflectiveTeaching and Teacher Professional Development Theory. From this study, the author hopes tohave a scenario of the current situation of English teachers’ professional development in primaryand secondary school in rural area in terms of quality of staff themselves, teaching and scientificresearch condition, training scheme etc. Furthermore, the author hopes this analysis could sortout the cause and consequence of teachers’ professional development in rural area, seekcorresponding policies to improve English teachers’ professional development, provideinspiration for the research of rural primary and secondary school English teachers’ professionaldevelopment.Research found that the main problems of current situation of rural school teachers’professional development in Hong’an:(1)from the aspect of professional knowledge,theknowledge structure is too single, the scope of knowledge is narrow and the knowledge levelswere not high and the professional knowledge is getting aging.(2) from the aspect of professionalcompetence,teaching ability is uneven,many teachers are lack of research and reflection ability,and many of them have the poor writing ability.(3) from the aspect of professional faith,Heavywork pressure and exam-oriented education leads teachers’ body and mind in a sub-health statefor a long time, strong sense of job burnout, professional development lack of autonomy,teaching reflection consciousness is not strong, The professional development of running out ofsteam.(4) from the professional development of teachers’ consciousness,Professionaldevelopment plan for individual teacher’s lack of overall consciousness, the lack of a clearautonomous learning in the process of professional development consciousness and ability, at the same time, the lack of the objective evaluation of their own professional development.(5) fromthe point of the study and related research work, teachers to participate in all kinds of trainingopportunities, relatively insufficient training content and teaching actual connection is not tight,training effectiveness is not high.English teachers in rural area should keep improving themselves’ quality to strengthen fromtheir hearts, specifically by self-renewal and reflection over their teaching. On parallel, In orderto make it more effective, personal develop training scheme should be designed for teachers andfulfill the demanding of teachers’ development.(1) the rural primary and secondary schoolEnglish teachers should take the initiative to build their own relevant theoretical knowledge;improve teaching ability in the teaching practice; Actively constructing education belief;Improve self professional development consciousness, develop teachers’ professionaldevelopment planning.(2) the school should actively carry out reading activities,enrich teachers’professional knowledge and humanistict; Efforts to create a reflection on the researchatmosphere and diversified evaluation mechanism of teachers, help teachers to cultivate goodprofessional habit; Rural schools to set up internal support system, to promote teacher’sprofessional belief of ascension.(3) the department in charge of education should take effectivemeasures to monitor the quality of rural primary and secondary school English teachers’professional knowledge development; Construction of urban and rural integration trainingnetwork, promote rural primary and secondary school English teachers’ professional ability; Withthe improvement of the welfare, promote the ascent of the rural primary and secondary schoolEnglish teachers’ professional faith; As an effective way to promote teachers’ professionaldevelopment, in view of the teachers’ training should take into account the characteristics ofadult learning, for teachers to choose to choose more suitable for their own development trainingprograms.
