Chinese martial arts are a rich cultural heritage created by our nation after thousands of years ofpractice. As a form of sport, martial arts has similar characteristics with other forms of sports, but it has itsown distinctive features as well, for it presents typical national feature by synthesizing the function offighting, preserving one’s health, performing and achieving Tao through the practice of Ji(physical skills).Thus, martial arts is not only a sort of sport, but also a form of art, which fully and profoundly reflects theunique Chinese aesthetics thoughts and aesthetic pursuit, and serves as an outstanding contribution to theworld’s culture and art. The investigation and research on the martial arts should not just be confined to thesports field, but also in other fields such as from the perspective of arts.As an art, martial arts must have its own unique presenting techniques and skills, otherwise, martialarts can not become "martial arts"; however, as an art of the Chinese nation, its performance practices andtechniques are also bound to under the guidance and within the constraint of the nation’s aestheticsthoughts and aesthetic pursuit. In the process of the performance of Chinese aesthetics and aesthetic pursuit,the martial arts’"feature" is obvious, and on the other hand, its commonness with other Chinese art formsare often overlooked and ignored. Because of this, the study on the commonness between Chinese martialarts and other arts has a special meaning and effect in terms of enhancing people’s awareness andunderstanding of the martial arts and promoting the development of martial arts career."White space" technique is a unique and important artistic expression in traditional Chinese art,especially in Chinese painting and calligraphy, this technique is particularly common and mature. Theappearance and perfection of "white space" technique and its theoretical system is a sign of Chinesetraditional arts’ maturity. The application and practice of "white space" technique and its theoretical systemin martial arts greatly enriched the artistic performance of martial arts, therefore laid the foundation ofaesthetics for martial arts to become a kind of art.In this paper, using the method of literature, logical analysis and interviews, the technique and theoryof "white space" in traditional Chinese arts like the calligraphy and painting is systematically summarized,the application and practice of the technique and theory of "white space" in martial arts is also explored and analyzed, which to a certain extent has enriched the theory of aesthetics and philosophy of martial arts. Thiswill strengthen people’s awareness and understanding of the martial arts, and provide a theoretical andtechnological support for the exchanges with other arts currently and in the future.This paper is divided into five parts: first, introduction; second, the "white space" techniques in martialarts; third, the "white space" represented in martial arts’ movements; fourth, the characteristics of martialarts’"white space"; fifth, conclusion. Through systematic analysis, detailed martial arts’"white space"techniques are introduced, and the commonness of martial arts and other Chinese art forms is alsodiscussed.
