Blank-space Maps is a widely used method of teaching geography,in which students are guided to take the initiative to perceive, observe and think by leaving appropriate blank space on the map,and to promote their understanding of geography in the process of filling in the white space. It is a widely used method for teaching geography. The Blank-space Maps teaching method plays an important role in developing students’ map skills, enhancing students’ learning initiative and strengthening their subject literacy. At present, there is a lack of systematic research on the application of Blank-space Maps in high school geography education activities.Evaluating the effect of Blank-space Maps in high school geography teaching and exploring the application strategies of Blank-space Maps in each teaching session are important to enrich the research methods of teaching geography map skills, improve the efficiency of geography teaching activities and enhance the quality of geography teaching. This paper investigates the current situation of the application of Blank-space Maps in high school geography classroom through questionnaire survey method and interview method, based on which, the effective strategy of Blank-space Maps teaching in geography teaching is proposed, the elements of Blank-space Maps teaching contained in Compulsory Study I and II and Selective Compulsory Study I and II of the textbook of the Humanities Edition are explored, and the ways of implementing the Blank-space Maps teaching strategy in teaching sessions and map ability cultivation are explored.A practical study of Blank-space Maps was conducted in high school geography teaching through a controlled experiment, and the problems that need attention in the practical operation of the Blank-space Maps strategy were analyzed. The main research results are as follows:(1)High school teachers and students were found to have a high level of acceptance of the use of Blank-space Maps in geography teaching, weak map skills among students, and a realistic need for Blank-space Maps teaching strategies. For students, students’ awareness of Blank-space Maps needs to be changed, but overall they showed high interest levels and students need to improve their map skills. For teachers, teachers generally accept the use of Blank-space Maps for teaching activities, but the application of Blank-space Maps in high school geography classrooms is limited by teachers’ personal teacher skills, teaching level, and sense of innovation.(2)A strategy for teaching Blank-space Maps is proposed,on the basis of which the ways of implementing the teaching strategy in high school geography are explored. The strategy of excavating, incorporating and using the Blank-space Maps is proposed. It explores the ways to implement the Blank-space Maps teaching strategy in the teaching sessions such as class introduction, new lesson lecture, class summary and homework assignment,as well as in the development of students’ map skills,so as to realize the combination of the Blank-space Maps teaching strategy and the examples in teaching.(3)To discover that high school geography textbooks are rich in content applicable to the Blank-space Maps teaching strategy.Through the study and analysis of the geography textbook of the People’s Republic of China,it is found that a large number of knowledge points in the textbook can be taught by using Blank-space Maps. These include knowledge about the earth, the movement of the atmosphere and water, disaster prevention and mitigation,cross-regional deployment of hydropower and mineral resources, the distribution and migration of population, the choice of industrial location, the interaction between transportation layout and regional development, the observation of landforms, soil and vegetation, the relationship between the security and development of China’s resources and energy and national security, the relationship between environment and development,etc.(4)It was found that the strategy of teaching Blank-space Maps could improve high school students’ geography performance, enhance their map ability, and improve the geography classroom atmosphere.By selecting the experimental class and the control class and conducting a comparison experiment,we analyzed and compared the differences between the experimental class and the control class in geography test scores, map ability, classroom head-up rate, classroom activity, and homework completion quality in the three experimental stages before and after the experiment, and confirmed that the application of the Blank-space Maps teaching strategy to high school geography teaching can improve high school students’ geography scores, improve the classroom atmosphere of geography classroom, exercise students’ map skills, enhance students’ interest in geography subjects, and improve the quality and efficiency of geography teaching.
