Chinese traditional musical instruments are symbols and carriers of Chinese music culture. Studying in them is of great importance to revival and reform of Chinese traditional music. However, researches on physics characteristics of Chinese traditional instruments are still in the start stage and basic data needs to be collected. In music performances, the acoustical design for performing architectures should base on the physics characteristics of sound sources. In addition, the reform of Chinese traditional instruments and Orchestra need to be instructed by researches on physics characteristics of Chinese traditional instruments.The main work of this paper was to collect the directivity data of Chinese traditional bowed strings instruments and draw the directivity patterns of them. The influences of speed,force, skills on the directivity patterns of Chinese traditional strings instruments were noticed on this research. A method for measuring Chinese traditional instruments in anechoic chamber had been designed. Five kinds of Chinese traditional strings instruments included Erhu, Zhonghu, Gaohu, Yehu, Jinghu playing five-tone scale were recorded with musician in an anechoic chamber with 25 microphones distributed around the player. For each instrument, five-tone scale was played with 3 kinds of force and 3 kinds of speed and several kinds of skills. And the directivity patterns of them were drew to describe the directivity characteristics of them.The measurement result showed that the directivity patterns of Chinese traditional bowed strings instruments change among frequency bands. The shape and structure of Chinese traditional bowed strings instruments as well as the gesture of the player had great influences on the directivity characteristics. However, the playing speed and force showed less effection on the directivity pattern, which was more apparent in lower frequency band. And individual difference were found on the changing of the directivity patterns caused by playing sills. Most of skills had little influence on it. But more obvious difference is noticed on the result of plucking skill.
