Bakhtin’s dialogue theory penetrates into the whole process of translation as a theory of studying the whole process of the text. Dialogic thinking emphasizes the combination of the work, the translator and its readers. They coordinate and communicate with each other, and finally different voices complete the work together by the mediation of the translator with the society involved in as an "outsider’The thesis, after introducing Bakhtin’s dialogue theory as the theoretical basis, makes an analysis of the social directivity of Lyell’s English translation of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan with dialogue theory. The social directivity refers to the fact that the social conditions are reflected by works while the social directivity of the translation is the characteristic of the social nature. In the dialogic process of translation the original author, translator, and readers are involved in the translation activity and the translation is produced by their dialogues. It should be noted that the translation makes a restriction to the subjects who participate in the process of translation so as to influence the characteristics of social directivity of the translation. This paper firstly explains the connotation of the social directivity of the translation, discussing what leads the social directivity and what is referred to from three aspects of subject, thinking, and relationship. And secondly on the basis of the previous studies, the thesis focuses on discussing the dialogue relations which take place in the three layers of the translator and the social ideology, the original work and the translator, together with the translator and the reader from the three manifestations of the social directivity that includes recognition of dominant political ideology, the prismatic images of social culture and the realism dimension of literary aesthetics and analyzing the influence and guidance of the dialogue relations to the social directivity of Lyell’s translation of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan under Bakhtin’s dialogue theoryIn this paper, the theory of dialogue explains the equal participation of outsideness among different main subjects in the translation process and dialogue coordination in differences. Firstly Lyell’s translation of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan is eloquent of the social directivity in the pursuit of faithfulness to the original. Lyell pays attention to the social "others" tension, listens to the voice of the others, and stimulates his own social emotions for writing the translation with his own "specific speech genres to speak Secondly, respecting the originally social background, Lyell inserts his own expression into the translation, adjusting the difference to make dialogue continue and ultimately achieve successful social dialogue.
