| The current translation report selects the first and second chapters of Land and Limits-Interpreting Sustainability in the Planning Process as its source text. The book was co-authored by Susan Elizabeth Owens, Professor of Environment and Policy in University of Cambridge, and Richard Cowell, Reader in Environmental Planning in Cardiff University. Based on the theories concerning land-use, the excerpts cover the gist of their research, and include the basic concepts and typical case study of the sustainability as well as the impacts brought by the sustainable development on the policies and practice in the United Kingdom.Land is universally claimed to play a vital role in not only the economic growth but also the sustainable development of society. United Kingdom, as a highly urbanized country, is sufficiently experienced in handling the land use issues. The translation of the source text, therefore, is hoped to shed some light on the social and economic strategies design in China. The source text is featured by precise structure,much information and complex sentences together with expertise. Drawing upon the adaptation theory advocated by Jef Verschueren, this translation report focuses on words, sentences and the textural cohesion in the translation and employs feasible translation strategies and methods to cope with the problems with a view to reducing translation errors and facilitating target readers’ reception.This translation report consists of four chapters. Chapter One covers the introduction of the source text, authors and the framework of this translation report.Chapter Two focuses on the preparations prior to the translation task, including the theory and tools employed. Chapter Three describes the translation process, covering the adopted theory and the language features of the source text as well as the case study. Chapter Four is the conclusive part, in which some experiences gained and lessons learned in the translation are listed. |
