Abstract/Summary:
This report is based on the translation practice of Chapter Three excerpted from the book Sustainability: What Everyone Needs to Know. This book is one of the series of“What Everyone Needs to Know”published by Oxford University Press with the topic of sustainability.Chapter Three mainly expounds the typical examples of sustainability in ecology, presents their relation and introduces the ecological concepts as well as principles of sustainability in detail by fourteen questions, such as ecosystem, nutrient cycle, stocks and flows and so on.By translating this chapter, the translator hopes that relevant scholars, students and other readers interested in this topic can better understand the essence and underlying logic of sustainability and then apply the concept of sustainability to daily life. This report firstly introduces the background and significance of the translation project as well as the structure of the report, analyzes the source text in terms of the content and linguistic features, and presents the whole process from preparation to revision. Then, guided by Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the translator has comprehensively applied various translation strategies and methods to deal with translation difficulties in order to achieve functional equivalence as well as illustrates the translation difficulties and corresponding solutions on the lexical, syntactic and textual levels. On the lexical level,by referring to the related documents, parallel texts and authoritative dictionaries as well as applying liberal translation, conversion of parts of speech and other strategies, the translator has conquered the translation of technical terms and proper nouns.Polysemes have been translated in the way of carefully and precisely analyzing the context. On the syntactic level, the translator has adopted translation methods such as division, reversion, amplification, change of voice, adjustment of word order, segmentation and restructuring of sentence structure to transform the complicated sentences in English to short sentences in Chinese. On the textual level, the translator has made a functional analysis of the special italics in the source text and converted them into corresponding stylistic formats in Chinese.Lastly, this report summarizes the lesson and problems to be solved in this translation project. The report consists of abundant typical cases in the translation project and plenty of problems that might be confronted with in informative text translation as well as the corresponding solutions, aiming to providing reference and offering help for translators who will conduct similar translation projects in the future.
