A Report On The Translation Of The Zero(Page 1-42)

This is a report based on the translation of the Zero, a fiction by Jess Walter in 2006, also a 9/11 literary work appearing after the 9/11 attacks, series terrorist attacks, satirized its response, rescue, and policy after the event. As the first Chinese translation, this report is on its translation from Page 1 to 42 of the first part, for it is the lead-in part to the whole story.Before translation, the translator finds that gaining background knowledge on author and The Zero, doing much research on literary characteristics, looking for available solutions on literary difficulties are crucial to literary translation and receptor is the one to check our translation. During translation, literary attainment is an important element, including Chinese literacy, diction, and comprehension ability, which lays a good foundation in translation. Meanwhile, doing much practice is another key factor in translation, for practice makes perfect. After translation, polishing and revising are crucial to finish the whole translation.There are two chapters in this report: chapter one is on source and target texts; five parts make up chapter two: the first is about 9/11 attacks and its literary works, Jess Walter and his work The Zero, and the significance of the translation. The next part is an analysis of the source text, which relates to literature characteristics: satire, mental trauma, psychological description, and fragmented narrative. Third, the report explores the translation process, preparation before translation and difficulties. Analyzing translation techniques and case study are in the following part, including: conversion, amplification, diction, restructuring, omission, and free translation. Finally, the report comes to the conclusion of the whole report by what have been learned and discussing the problems that have yet to be solved.
