A Report On The Translation Of The Oxford History Of Literary Translation In English(Excerpts)

This report relates the translation practice of pages 121-153 and pages 439-442 of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English,edited by Gordon Braden and published in 2010.Consisting of ten parts.the book elaborates the history of literary translation in English comprehensively and systematically in detail.It is translated by teamwork and the part of author's translation mainly narrates the Bible,the Psalms and Bible Commentary.In consideration of the language features of the source text(ST),the author applies theory of equivalent effect by Jin Di as the guiding principle for the translation task.The report is formed by five chapters.The first one is introduction including description,significance and requirements of the task;the second one comes the narration of preparation of the task;the third one consists of introduction to the theory of equivalent effect and its guidance to the task;the fourth one,case analysis under the guidance of the theory,includes translation of lexical,syntactic and textual expressions,each with certain prominent aspects to be analyzed in detail:the first category narrates the translation of abstract nouns and culture-loaded words,the second one long and complicated sentences and passive voice.the last one cohesion and coherence;the fifth one is the conclusion of the task.Under the guidance of the theory of equivalent effect the author takes various translation methods and skills to enhance the ability to translation practice and overcome difficulties in the process so as to faithfully transform information to Chinese readers and enable them to obtain the same meaning and appreciation as their English counterparts.Thus,the targeted text(TT)takes the same effect as the ST.As such,the author hopes that,to a certain degree,the task can promote a better understanding of history of literal translation in English among Chinese readers.
