Abstract/Summary:
Cao Naiqian, a native writer of Shanxi Province, describes in his novel There’s Nothing I Can Do When I Think of You Late at Night (《到黑夜想你没办法》)the original state of farmers and the rural area, and the uniqueness of the local customs and the locals’ feelings, and his heartfelt sympathy with the fellow villagers through Yingxian dialect, which is concise and meaningful and full of great power. The dialect contains profound connotative meaning and deep cultural intention that the standard language does not have. But because dialect incorporates local characteristics, it usually poses a big challenge to the translator.Though the scholars at home and abroad have to some extent focused on it, the scope and perspective of what they think about are relatively not wide enough. Therefore, dialect translation in literary works is still a topic that is worthy of in-depth discussion. The thesis takes this novel as an example to analyze dialect translation in the English version by John Baclom (陶忘机)from the perspective of Integrated Approach proposed by Snell-Hornby with a dialect translation corpus built up by the author. The analysis has been conducted from two aspects: linguistic level and cultural level in order to best reflect the accuracy and the cultural transmission, enhancing the readability and acceptability of the target text in the target-language culture. The whole analysis has been illustrated with examples.According to a series of studies and analyses, the author finds that the translator is inclined to adopt colloquial translation in the process of dialect translation. The literal meaning of the dialect has been manifested, but the cultural meaning of it has been lost in the English translation. The lack of translation accuracy leads to the insufficiency of the description of the characters’characteristics and feelings and even the cultural features. According to the analysis steps of Integrated Approach, the translator ought to think about dialect translation in five steps: function of the target text in the target-language culture;intra-textual coherence of the target text; function of the source text in the source-language culture; intra-textual coherence of the source text; inter-textual coherence between the source text and the target text. The thesis makes a tentative research on dialect translation and offers a brand new research perspective, expecting to provide some guidance for the translation of the same kind of literary works and finally doing some contribution for the going global of the Chinese Literature.
