Report On Chinese Translation Of Our Life In China (Chapter5、Chapter8、Chapter11)

This report is based on the translation of several chapters which are contained in the book Our life in China. Hans Vermeer’s Skopos theory and its three principles provided the theoretical guidance for this translation practice. The three principles of Skopos theory are skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. Skopos rule is the primary one, the second is coherence rule and then the fidelity rule. The book involved social culture, traditional culture and religious belief. The key point of this translation report is to find a way to combine the target text with the source text. First, the translator should keep a neutral attitude while translating, second, some proper measures should be taken to meet the reader’s real need.The book widely narrates Chinese geography, history, diplomacy, religion, government agencies and law etc., and the Chinese psychology and local conditions and customs are also recorded detailedly. Another feature of the book is that the author comprehensively introduced how they preached and taught firmly in Fuzhou, as well as the process of creating churches and schools. Besides, he also mentioned works and view reference of his contemporary preachers many times. Life among the Chinese plays a significant role in discussing the Western preachers took the bull by the horns to adapt to Chinese environment, even at the expense of life safety, but they are always loyal to their missionary work and education, so this book is indeed rarely precious materials.The purpose of this report is to consider how to translate the original version into Chinese under the guidance of Skopos theory and the Chinese version should be accepted well by the readers. Some representative words, sentences, paragraphs will be given in the report to explain the details. Besides, during the process of translation, the interpreter should pay attention to protect characteristics of the originals.
