Selected E-C Translation Of Finding Me And A Critical Commentary

This translation project consists of an E-C translation with more than 10,000 words and a critical commentary.The original text is selected from the last three chapters of Finding Me, a memoir of Michelle Knight who was one of the three victims of Cleveland Abduction. The book documents Michelle’s miserable childhood, her more than a decade of maltreatment with other two females at the hand of their abductor and her life after escaping from the house of horror. The translated parts tell the stories of their escape and Michelle’s life and hope afterward.The chosen text is both meaningful and challenging. Socially, Michelle’s positive attitude toward life can inspire readers to cherish life. The documentary presentation of the crime also provides useful information for police researching criminal minds to benefit future criminal investigation. Academically, there are lots of difficulties in this translation project such as alternation between English and Chinese sentence structures, and translation of implicit and extension meanings. I adopted different syntactic and semantic translation strategies to solve the translation problems flexibly. Meanwhile the analytic process of the strategies and solutions to the typical translation problems are provided.In this graduation project, the source text with its Chinese version and a critical commentary are included. The commentary part gives the introduction of the material and the detailed translation strategies I have adopted in my translation process. The strategies are hoped to benefit other translators for their translation practice. Translators can apply the methods directly or extend their own based on mine when they face similar problems.
