This report is a critical commentary on an English-Chinese translation of Chapter Five from the book Brand New Nation: Capitalist Dreams and Nationalist Designs in Twenty-First-Century India. This book is a social science monograph written by Ravinder Kaur,a historian of contemporary India. Her research interests include the disciplines of history, anthropology, and international politics. The book Brand New Nation explores the enduring history of India’s transformation into an emerging market in the 21 st century. And Chapter Five—The Magical Market—is selected as the source text. This chapter centers on Kaur’s field study in Davos at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum and introduces a unique Indian tradition—adda. This report consists of four parts, which are the introduction of the project, theoretical guidance, case analysis, and conclusion.According to Peter Newmark’s Text Typology theory, the source text is classified as informative text. And under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory, the translator adopts certain translation strategies at lexical and syntactic levels to make the translation clearer, smoother, and more readable. These strategies include conversion, addition, annotation, division, reconstruction, and turning passive voice into active voice. The significance of this project lies in two ways.First, the translation can let the Chinese readers learn more about India’s relentless efforts to transform into an attractive investment destination;meanwhile,it provides the readers with a new perspective to observe India.Second, the translation practice proves the feasibility and effectiveness of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory as well as certain translation strategies when translating informative texts.
