E-C Translation Of The Eleventh Chapter Of Freedom From Fear:the American People In Depression And War,1929-1945and A Critical Commentary

The translation material of this project is selected from David M. Kennedy’s Freedom from Fear:The American People in Depression and War,1929-1945, Chapter11The Ordeal of Franklin Roosevelt. From1929to1945, two catastrophe were visited upon the American people:the Great Depression and World War Ⅱ, which greatly influenced the development and reform of the United States. Roosevelt’s New Deal helped American people out of the trouble in the face of the Great Depression. However, the implementation of New Deal was opposed fiercely by the Conservatives of Democrats and Republicans. The selected chapter is mainly concerned with the confrontation and struggle of New Deal with the Court.This project is divided into two parts:(1) Translation. Under the guidance of the relevance theory, the author completes the translation work by consulting related historical documents and adopting the translation strategies of literal translation with annotation, conversion, division, reversion and addition;(2) Critical commentary. The commentary illustrates how the translation strategies are used by giving specific examples, discusses the difficulties in translation and the corresponding solutions, and summarizes what the author has learned from this translation practice.The significance of the project lies in two ways. Firstly, through the translation, the complex interplay between continuing economic stagnation and Roosevelt’s remarkable programs of social and economic reform can be better traced and understood, which provides historical materials for the research of American history from1929to1945. Secondly, from a practical standpoint, the translation project can provide other translators with some helpful suggestions when dealing with the translation of historical literature.
