A Report On The Translation Of How To Understand A Company’s Financial Statement

With the development of globalization, the economic exchanges between China and other countries of the world has become more frequent, and more and more domestic enterprises entered the international market. An informative text, with much information and strong practicability, is mainly used to convey information, so it has been playing a more important role in international exchanges. Therefore, there is a growing demand for translating it, and studies on translation strategies for informative texts have been receiving increasing attention.This translation practice report is based on the translation project of How to Understand a Company’s Financial Statement, a handbook of Zhangjiagang Sock Company, and it mainly explains the specific contents and meaning of a financial statement. The translation is used to help the foreign staff of the company understand financial statements, and make them introduce financial information to the shareholders and creditors, especially for foreign investors. This report falls into five sections:the introduction, the main contents of the translation project, the exposition to the translation process, the analysis of translation samples and the summary. It focuses on describing the two problems the reporter met during the translation process. One is how to make the target text accurate; the other is how to make the target text faithful. To solve them, strategies like direct search, frequency check in corpuses, comparison of synonyms, looking up in dictionaries and Trados are used to ensure the accuracy of vocabularies, especially terminologies. And four translation strategies are used to achieve faithfulness, and they are conversion in the voices, conversion of parts of speech, amplification and sequencing. By this study, the reporter hopes to provide some suggestions for following translations of informative texts on finance and accounting from Chinese to English.
