Li Shutong’s life can be regarded as legendary. Before he became a monk, he is a widely known master for his amazing knowledge and thoughts when he was only20. He reached great accomplishments in music, drama, art, literature and epigraphy.What’s more, he enlightened many mainstays for Chinese Modern Art. After he became a monk, he concentrated on studying Kegon Classic, promoting Vinaya and practicing Pure Land and inner pease; and finally became the Eleventh Generation ancestor of Vinaya in China Nanshan Buddhism. His legendary life attracts countless researchers from different aspects, such as Art, Buddism, life experience and so on.This article is in the purpose of studying Li’s thoughts before and after he became a monk, exploring the Buddism view reflected in his song’s tunes and lyrics and discovering the transcendence from his song to the traditional Buddism based on the life experience before and after Li became a monk and on his tunes and lyrics combined with his religious thoughts.The article is composed of five parts. Introduction briefly introduced background of the research and main framework of the article. Chapter One explores Li’s thoughts in different life period and his Buddism characteristics, recognizes his contribution to the studying and understanding of Buddism between the clerical and secular world. Chapter Two analyzes the Dhama Images in Master Hong Yi’s songs before and after he became a monk based on his Dhama view. Chapter Three, based on the analysis in previous chapters, concludes that, comparing with the traditional Buddism songs, the transcendence and the thought harmony of Buddism in Master Hong Yi’s songs.Conclusion provides a concluding discussion for the whole research.
