Master Hong Yi(1880-1942),called Li Shutong,is a pioneer in China’s New Culture Movement, and an excellent representative of Chinese traditional culture and buddhist culture. Also he had many titles, artist, educator, thinker, tinnovator and so on.More importantly,he which was nominated for the11th ancestor had made a significant contribution in Nan-shan Dharma.Previous academic discussion of Master Hong Yi,usually presents two trends:first, pay more attention on Hong Yi’s artist career, and the other one is exploring Master Hong Yi’s Buddhist life.Overall, these two researches have both achieved fruitful results, but they are hard to get a complete image of Master Hong Yi.Therefore, this paper may be a little different from that. We are trying to using a combination method on the basis, say literary and religion, and researching Master Hong Yi’s artist career, Buddhist contribution,Buddhist characteristics of the sort. Finally we get a whole characterization of Master Hong Yi.
