This report, based on the translation of the former four chapters’text of the novel Feathers, is an introduction to the translation task, an analysis and summary of its process as well as a conclusion. The novel Feathers, a children historical book, is written by African American female writer Jacqueline Woodson. It develops a story about a sixth grade girl named Frannie growing up in the 1970s. Feathers grapples with concepts such as race, religion, understanding and hope. The book describes what it was like to grow up right after segregation had been outlawed, how all people are equal, and that hope is everywhere. The translation report of the English novel involves four chapters:description of translation task, translating process, case study and conclusion.Chapter one, the task description, gives an introduction of the background information and characteristics of the source text.Chapter two, the translation process, is mainly about the reading and studying of the original, the selection of translation instructional theory as well as assistant tools, etc.The third chapter, case analysis as the core of the report, deeply analyzes translation obstacles including lexical and syntactical analysis and their correspondent applied translation methods and strategies with the instruction of Nida’s functional equivalence theory. The fourth chapter, conclusion, summarizes what the translator has experienced and has gained through the whole translating practice. As for a translator, we are supposed to strengthen a solid bilingual foundation, get a further apprehension of bilateral cultural background and proficiently grasp desired translating skills, in which case increasing professional and authentic translation works are bound to come out.
