A Report On The E-C Translation Of Dear Life (Excerpts)

In the era of cultural communication of “Global village”, we are committed to the diversification of Chinese culture under the spiritual guidance of “going out” and “bringing in”. Literary translation, particularly the novel translation, has played a big role in the promotion of cultural exchange between China and the West.Based on personal interests and translation practice, the author chosen Canadian female writer---Alice Munro’s short story collection---Dear Life as the research material to do translation and some related translation studies. The source texts includes the first Chapter, the second Chapter, and the tenth Chapter of Dear Life. This thesis mainly analyze the description of some vivid dialogues and actions of different characters, as well as the description of environment and poems from the selected novel. After carefully pondering the difference of culture background and language acceptance, the author adopted appropriate translation methods and strategies through a specific analysis and a detailed understanding, so as to make the target language realize the harmonious unity of its skopos,coherence and fidelity.The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter Ⅰ is a brief introduction of the translation task and requirement. Chapter Ⅱ describes the preparation before interpretation, including the analysis of text characteristics, preparation of theory, and parallel texts reading. Chapter Ⅲ present the cases of difficulties in translation, and their translation method. Chapter Ⅳ is the conclusion.The aim of this paper is to acquire the ideal target text under the guidance of skopostheorie, which is not only faithful to the source text, but also meet readers’ reading expectations, and hope that the thesis will be helpful to those who are studying the translation of Alice Munro’s novel.
