Dear Evan Hansen is an American novel written by Val Emmich,Steven Levenson,Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.It is written in English and the first edition was published by the publisher Poppy,a division of Little,Brown and Company,in October 2008.This novel reflects American youth’s psychological problems, family education and school education through describing American Teenager’s life.At the same time,it also includes campus bullying, adolescent suicide and other social problems. It is a typical youth novel and a typical Bildungsroman. The whole book is divided into 2 parts and there are 26 chapters and a epilogue in it.And chapters 17-26,which contain 30017 words in total are chosen to do the translation practice. The novel Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of an adolescent boy suffering from social phobia, from a first-person perspective,in a completely colloquial language. Its language style is a combination of humor and seriousness, and its language logic is sometimes clear and meticulous, sometimes unrestrained,so the way teenagers think and the state of mind are displayed incisively and vividly. The whole work is based on simple sentences, without too many flowery words. There are a lot of metaphors, personifications and exaggerations in the novel, which make the words flexible and attractive. At first,Dear Evan Hansen is famous as a musical on Broadway, which won the best musical and five other awards, and nominated for three awards of the 2017 Tony Awards. Also in 2018,Dear Evan Hansen won the 60th Grammy Award“Best musical album”.The musical about the psychological and educational problems of teenagers has caused great repercussions around the world.Based on his interest in young readers’books and the profound influence of musicals, the translator, after reading the novel, thought that he could handle its difficulty and selected the novel as the source text material for translation practice, hoping to do some work for the translation of young readers’ literature works. This paper is based on the translation practice of this novel. In the translation practice, the translator tries to use the theory of Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation Theory to guide the practice. This theory is the core of Peter Newmark’s translation theories. In order to bring younger readers a better reading experience and effect,Communicative Translation Theory is adopted as the main guidance, and Semantic Translation Theory as the supplement.According to the theoretical guidance, domestication translation strategy is adopted as the main strategy and foreignization translation strategy as the supplement. This report is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction, which introduces the background of the source text and the reasons and significance of choosing to translate the text. The second part mainly introduces the translation process, including pre-translation preparation, translation practice and post-translation reflection and evaluation. The third part introduces the theory and application of semantics and communicative translation,as well as the translation strategies adopted under the guidance of semantics and communicative translation theory. The fourth part is case study.According to the characteristics and nature of the original text, this paper takes the content of the novel as an example to analyze the translation techniques and strategies from the lexical, syntactic, textual and cultural levels, and to retain the spirit of the original text,so as to convey the core ideas expressed in the original text. The fifth part summarizes the process and experience of translation practice, and puts forward some unsolved problems in the process of translation practice.
