Total Physical Response, also known as ‘TPR’, is formulated by American scholar James Asher. In this method, both vocal language and physical language are synchronized through action responses and the use of imperative. Teachers as well as students are involved in this teaching process. The students learn language on the comprehension of the action that the teacher has made, and then they imitate the same action based on their understandings. In this way, students are getting closer to the language, and the confidence of learning or speaking will be promoted. The teaching regular pattern ‘listen before speak’ is also reflected, which leads to a better result during the teaching process.Firstly this paper enumerates the differences between TPR teaching approach and others teaching approaches, in terms of theoretical basis and research methods. And this paper attempts to prove the effectiveness of TPR in Chinese teaching. The writer collected analysis of the application of TPR based on the real teaching experience in Chile, and also on the principles that should be applied. This paper, written with the approaches of observation, statistical analysis, and personal visiting approach, focuses on the discussion of the feasibility of TPR approach. With the prospect of the future in the fields of Chinese teaching, the writer hopes to make some contribution to the language teaching research.
