The Translation Of Direct Speech In News Discourse

Since the international communication develops with increasing frequency, the news, as a main and essential means of diffusing information, has been expanding its scope and depth. The use of direct speech is the most prominent feature in news’ language. Therefore, the study of direct speech in news discourse has drawn a lot interest of scholars.The direct speech, which presents a high frequency of occurrence in English news discourse, is a pragmatic strategy to realize the facticity of news. However, it is not the same in Chinese news. Based on communicative translation, the thesis intends to analyze the translation of direct speech in news discourse. Firstly, it gives a brief introduction about the communicative translation theory and literary review about it. Secondly, it analyzes the direct speech from the perspective of form and function. Thirdly, it tells how the author translates the direct speech. Finally, the thesis dialectically reviews and summarizes the above mentioned issues. It argues that the communicative translation theory has a far-reaching significance to news translation.At last the thesis points out that when translating the news discourse, retaining the direct speech or changing direct speech to other speech modes are the effective translation strategy. Though the thesis tackles only with the translation of direct speech in “State of Deception”, it hopes that some inspirations may be expected to be provided to other news translation.
