A Report On Chinese Translation Of Excerpts In Out Of The Shelter

This report is an analysis of Chinese translation of Out of the Shelter (chapter1-chapter2), written by David Lodge, a famous British novelist. Published in 1970, this novel mainly describes the ideological changing process of a boy called Timothy, who was born into a Catholic family. When Timothy was young, he received traditional Catholic education and deeply believed in its doctrine. However, he went abroad at the age of 16 and the experience of going overseas changed his mind a lot. Particularly, Americans’view of life which gave priority to hedonism shocked him greatly. Then he became suspicious of the Catholic doctrine and began to think over again the meaning of observing the rules of his faith. In fact, the ideological change of Timothy exactly mirrors what David Lodge thinks in his life. This novel totally has three chapters and the first two chapters are translated and analyzed. Eventually, a translation report is finished after some case studies and problems are concluded. This report includes five parts.The author mainly introduces Tytler’s principles of translation and some relevant translation approaches, aiming to provide specific theoretical support in analyzing some typical sentences. In the first part, some information about the translation project is introduced. The second part of this report describes the author’s detailed preparations in the process of translating. Then Tytler’s principles of translation and relevant translation approaches, combined with some case studies, are explained in the third part, also the main part of this report. When analyzing sentences, the author adopts syntactic and lexical skills to give vivid explanations of them. The fourth part focuses on some conclusions of the author, which can be used as a reference for further improvements.
