A Study On The Words Of Xuan Guai Lu

Xuanguai Lu is one of the representative section of Legendary Novels of Tang Dynasty, saving a lot of legends, the language of which is concise and lively, mainly in classical Chinese, and at the same time, combined the common language of the times during which the author living. All of these make it become a precious corpus for our study of modern Chinese. In this paper we choose the Xuanguai Lu and The Xu Xuanguai Lu compiled by Cheng Yizhong as our dibon, trying to show its lexical features and importance during modern Chinese period through careful comparison and deep investigation of the words in this book.The body of this thesis consists of three chapters:The first chapter mainly introduces the Xuanguai Lu’s author, contents, version and present state of the study on this book. Through comparison with the Great Dictionary of Chinese and Tang and Five Dynasties Linguistic Dictionary, it fully studies and depicts the lexical features and the language value of the book.In chapter II, by consulting reference books and searching Ancient Chinese Basic Library, we explain some of the words in Xuanguai Lu. This part is divided into two sections: the first section is to explain 17 misinterpretation words which were explained by others,such as “BUTONG”,“BUJI”,“MINGFU”; section second, we explain 21 words which were not fully interpretive yet, such as “TUDIZHU”, “BI”, “FENGYI”, in order to give much more reasonable explanation to them.In chapter III, based on the Great Dictionary of Chinese, as well as Tang and Five Dynasties Linguistic Dictionary, it studies on the lexicographic value of this book from four different aspects:1) Making up for the error of recording the words and phrases; 2) Completing the meaning of words; 3) Shifting the example of a word putting into use to an earlier time; 4) Adding other documented evidence for a word.In order to be more comprehensive, intuitive display the face of Xuanguai Lu’s text and lexical features, we prepared two appendices:1) List all the words involved in the second chapter and the third chapter in accordance with a certain style for easier retrieval and utilization; 2) List the reading notes on the book.
