The Mother at Home is on the art of mothering and what the mother should do at home. This pedagogical book is written by John S.C. Abbott for any girl who is lack of discipline during her growing-up process and needs instructions on proper discipline of her own children. This report is based on the translation of Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and Chapter 4 of The Mother at Home. At the beginning of it, the translator introduces the text, the author, language features of the original and significance of the translation, which offers readers a general idea of this book. As for the task description, she illustrates her responsibilities as a translator and proofreader, useful dictionaries and websites, parallel text, criteria of the translation and the quality control of her work. In order to overcome difficulties encountered in the translation, she discusses Peter Newmark’s translation methods(communicative translation and semantic translation) and translation techniques, such as amplification, omission, the use of opposites, division and combination etc, which becomes the most important part of the report. After all the discussion, a conclusion is made to summarize the report and demonstrates what the translator has learned from the translation.
