This is an E-C translation practice report on a documentary literature Going Home written by Doris Lessing.Going Home describes the author’s return to Southern Rhodesia(now Zimbabwe)in 1956,where she had lived for 25 years. What she saw and heard reminded her of her past in Africa. The book was published by Ballantine Books in 1957 and hasn’t been translated into Chinese in China. The first chapter of the documentary literature are translated into Chinese which tells the story of the author’s flight from Britain to several African countries. On the way,he met different characters and communicated with them.Guided by Peter Newmark’s translation theory, this report analyzes typical cases from two aspects. On one hand,in the application of semantic translation,it is necessary to restore proper nouns, appropriately supplement background knowledge, reproduce the vivid rhetoric of the original text and retain characters’ dialogue features,so as to explore how the translation can faithfully express the original meaning and retain the original style to the maximum extent; On the other hand,in the application of communicative translation, the translator changes the meaning of some words, highlights the contextual meaning, breaks and combines sentences, adjusts sentence structure and maintains coherence among paragraphs,so that the target readers can accurately understand the original text and generate emotional resonance. The translator should combine properly semantic translation with communicative translation, and implement the accurate context meaning of the Chinese version to ensure the fluency and readability.Through this translation practice, the author summarizes practical experience, and the practice proves that only proper use of semantic translation and communicative translation can ensure the accuracy and fluency of the translation content. At the same time, the author believes that Newmark’s translation theory has theoretical guiding significance for the translation of documentary literature.
