This is a translation practice report from English to Chinese of Coming Home.Coming Home is one of the representative works of British writer Patricia Wilson.Published in 1996,it is a love novel with plain language style,which closes to contemporary real life and embodies the modern women’s outlook on life,values and love.The translator has completed 18,000 words from Chapter three to Chapter five.In this practice report,the first part is a brief introduction to translation tasks,which briefly introduces the content,features and the author of the source text.The second part is the translation process,including pre-translation,translation process and post-translation.The third part is the description of translation theory,which briefly introduces the background and application of Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation theory.Based on the theory of communicative translation and semantic translation,the fourth part studies and analyzes the source text from the rhetorical aspect,so as to draw the translation strategies and methods that should be adopted in the specific translation practice.The fifth part is the conclusion in which the author analyzes the problems and difficulties in the translation practice,finds shortcomings and provides some guidance for future translation.According to the language characteristics and writing style of the source text,the translator chooses Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation theory to guide the translation practice.Through the specific analysis from the rhetorical point of view,including simile,metaphor,personification and alliteration,combined with the different context,emotional color and characters’ features of the source text,the translator adopts different translation strategies to translate.The focus of communicative translation is on the target language readers,so as to eliminate the reading obstacles and make the communication go smoothly,while semantic translation emphasizes more on maintaining the content and characteristics of the source text and trying to convey the information more accurately.When translating,translators should choose the appropriate theory according to the specific situation,and analyze the source text from the combination of the two theories.
