A Report On Chinese-English Translation Strategies Of Null-subject Sentences

Nowadays, an all-round, wide-ranging and multi-level international cooperationpattern has formed. The model and content of cooperation and exchange also becomericher. For a Sino-American joint venture, in which the author used to practice, technicalexchange is priority. Therefore, the translation of files with high quality can promotetechnical cooperation as well as the long-term development of the company.This practice report is based on the Chinese-English translation of safety technicoperation regulations, which is chosen from the operation files translation of aSino-American joint venture that the author has engaged in during the internship. Theauthor analyzes safety technic operation regulations and relevant translation strategies toprovide a preference to the research of null-subject sentences in regulation texts.Owing to differences in the thinking modes and syntactic structures between Chineseand English, how to deal with Chinese null-subject sentences is difficult in the process oftranslation. Safety Technic Operation Regulations are operation steps and attention pointsthat shall be followed by workers during the operation procedure. The language isaccurate and concise with subject omitted. In this report, some translation strategies ofnull-subject sentences will be discussed with the guidance of three principles of Skopostheory by analyzing some cases in the translation materials. These strategies are as follows: adding subject directly; converting the active voice into the passive voice；usingthe imperatives；adopting the sentence structure of “There be”.
