With the continuous development of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, thetraining of four skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing is becomingmore and more scientific and perfect. Reading class, undertaking the training of aspecial skill---reading, is also constantly developing and types of it graduallydiversifies. Among them, the periodical reading class has become an important type ofclass to cultivate senior foreign students’ reading ability, which attracts commonconcerns from scholars and learners. At the same time, because of the abundant contentin itself and the characteristic of close to real life, foreign students love it. Therefore,more and more schools have opened this course.However, the establishment and maturity of the periodical course are both a bit late,and the study by academics towards it is not deep and extensive. The existing researchmostly focuses on the contrast research on the teaching materials, and discussion onthe teaching methods. The study of exercises after class of the teaching materials,especially the study of students’learning situation of exercises after class, is very rare.However, exercises after class, as an important part of a teaching material, is ansignificant element of in teachers’ class teaching. How to handle the exercises afterschool not only reflect whether the teaching skills of the teachers is maturing or not,but also have direct connection with class learning effect. Its importance is self-evident.However, the lack of certain theoretical results has resulted in the lack of theoreticalguidance to teachers in practical teaching.This paper bases on the author’s practical opportunity in teaching Chinese as aforeign language, and combines with the actual situation. Besides, it uses theexercises after class in the "Reading the Newspaper, Learning Chinese---IntermediateChinese Newspaper Reading"(Volume1&Volume2), which published by the Beijinguniversity press and edited by Mr Wu Nian cheng, as research object. It integratevarious research methods including questionnaires, corpus analysis and so forth.Through investigating and analyzing the factual situation when students complete theexercises after class, and mainly summarizing the common mistakes appeared after finishing various types of exercises after class, it further analysis the type of mistakesand the reasons of it to discuss corresponding teaching strategies. Hope this paperoffers referenced opinions and suggestions for the teachers, who teach Chinese as asecond language, can effectively teach exercises after class in periodical reading class.At the same time, we also hope that the learners can gain valuable reference andenlightenment from it, so as to improve the teachers’ teaching quality of periodicalreading, and promote the students’ comprehensive ability of reading the periodicals.
